If I want to defend my house the best which house upgrade is better?

I do not understand the key differences between the house upgrade paths, or if even matters that much which one you pick? One must put fuel in a fuel powered house, so there needs to be a major benefit to this upgrade to make it worth it. Is it easier to complete one type of upgrade?
